Accelerated introduction of energy saving equipments

As an energy-inetensive industry, the Japanese paper industry has implemented various energy saving measures for years. With the pressing need for further efforts in the face of global climate change and other circumstances, the industry continues to make further improvements in this regard. Japanese paper companies have been engaged in constant review of their equipment and facilities of manufacturing processes to study and introduce more energy saving equipment and systems (see Table 1). In terms of capital investment, a yearly average of about 12 billion yen was invested since FY2000, evidencing their proactive approach to the energy measures (see Graph 1).
The co-generation system, which uses the steam produced by burning fuel and is also used for power generation, has long been utilized by the pulp and paper companies. Today, the system is also employed in the papermaking process in the Japanese paper industry. This is another example of the industry's efforts to raise energy efficiency even by a small margin.
